What do you hope your participants take away from the experience? And in my experience, that type of naked vulnerability often leads to a more compelling photo. How do you portray yourself when you’re in charge of the clicker? Self-Portrait Project images are uniquely honest in that, when you look at a typical portrait taken using our system, you are looking at a picture of someone looking directly at themselves via the two-way mirror. I’m interested in what happens when the photographer and the photographed are one and the same. The resulting image – the digital file, the print – besides being a different physical object altogether than the thing which was photographed, reflects the intentions, compulsions, and aesthetics of the individual taking the photograph. Taking a picture is a transformative act. What difference does it make when people can see their reflection while taking their own portrait? The Self-Portrait Project’s two-way mirror + remote control system was devised as an intentional way of modeling this aforementioned paradigm of self-determination: you use the mirror to choose how you want to present yourself in your own portrait, and you have agency over when you take that picture with the remote control. What inspired you to make the Self-Portrait Project?ĭuring my time with Other Worlds, I photographed social movements such as the Landless Workers Movement of Brazil worker-controlled factories in Argentina a traditional gift economy in Mali and the Zapatistas of Chiapas, Mexico. When I got back to the states, I met an extraordinary activist named Beverly Bell, with whom I founded a non-profit we called Other Worlds.

After coming into some money when I turned 18, I got involved in philanthropy, which led me to India in 2003 I met with non-profits and changemakers there, learning about what was fucked with the world and how to support those working to solve it, and all the while photographing across the subcontinent with a hulking medium format film camera.
